Job Description

The Registered Nurse - Outpatient is a Registered Nurse that has mastered more advanced technical and organizational nursing skills. He or she is skilled in evaluating patient responses and uses past experiences in providing care in the outpatient clinical setting. Patients and families are viewed holistically, there is a focus on outcomes, and care is delivered using a systematic approach. The Proficient level RN is able to make decisions guided by experience, as well as policies, procedures, guidelines and standards. He or she consults with other members of the healthcare team when necessary. At the Proficient level, the RN can comfortably care for patients in his or her clinical area.

OSD is an Outpatient Surgery Department under the Surgical Services umbrella. OSD provides OR access to Outpatient Cases, which meet the exclusion criteria. We have 5 OR’s, and 1 Robot. The department completes a large amount of ENT, Podiatry, General, Endoscopy (Completed by General Surgeons), Orthopedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Pain Management specialties. OSD provides care to a large amount of pediatric patients who meet Outpatient criteria for cases. OSD is an all encompassed department with PreOP, and PACU rolled into the OR cost center as one. OSD staff are expected to float up to Main IP departments when the census permits. OSD RN’s receive Out Patient wages. With that, applicants should be made aware (mostly when transferring), that there is a difference in Inpatient/ Outpatient wage. Once nurses are off orientation, director works with Compensation department to create a job share for fair working wages. For example, RN 1 finishes orientation. An HR Change form is submitted to create Out Patient role as 0.9 FTE (1233) and Inpatient Role (1232) as 0.1 FTE. This way when the RN is clocking into an Inpatient department, their code is changed and they are payed Inpatient wages. Staff at OSD are not required to take call in other departments, but are able to do so once proficiency is demonstrated.
