Listed is the base hiring salary range offered for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors, including but not limited to skills and experience. The salary range listed is just one component of the total rewards/compensation package offered to candidates.

Hourly Rate = $22.00/ hr.


Summary:

The nurse extern I, under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), is responsible for providing appropriate nursing care to patients. The NE care includes providing basic data collection and documentation of patient progress; observing, administering and documenting approved nursing procedures; attending to patients' comfort needs and performing specific duties related to the assigned nursing unit. A registered nurse may supervise an extern employed by a facility, only if the nurse extern is currently enrolled in an approved accredited nursing program. The extern must show proof of having completed didactic instruction with clinical validation in fundamental nursing skills and satisfactory completion of clinical experience in the nursing program. The nurse extern, under the supervision of a registered nurse, may perform other skills for which she/he has received didactic and clinical instruction in his/her program including, medication administration. All skills must be validated by a qualified preceptor and documented in accordance with the organization policies.

Under the supervision or guidance of a registered nurse, works on representing the concerns of the patient/family and nursing staff; serving as an agent in identifying and helping to resolve ethical and clinical concerns within the clinical setting.

Identifies the client/family’s need for basic information in a clear, understandable language as evidenced by documentation and team feedback

Demonstrates and understands the concept and importance of client/family advocacy

Maintains and is respectful of client confidentiality

Under the supervision or guidance of a registered nurse, collaborates in recognizing and differences to incorporate in the plan of care. Demonstrates commitment to patients by participation in the implementation of the nursing process in providing patient care under the direction of the RN preceptor. Seeks advice for situations not familiar to them.

Under the supervision or guidance of a registered nurse, demonstrates nursing activities that create a compassionate, supportive, and therapeutic environment for patients and staff, with the goal of promoting comfort and healing. Includes, but is not limited to engagement and responsiveness of caregivers, including family and healthcare personnel.

Performs assessments focusing on the physical and psychosocial needs of the patient in an ongoing and systematic manner as evidenced by documentation and team feedback.

Participates with preceptor in formulating a plan of care which is prioritized and based on nursing assessment. Care is based on plan of care

Under the supervision or guidance of a registered nurse, works to develop a body of knowledge and tools that allows the extern to manage whatever environmental and system resources exist for the patient and/or family.

Demonstrates and verbalizes understanding of the concept of implementing care and eventually applies and evaluates application of this concept, as evidenced by preceptor, team, and/or patient feedback.

Progresses from viewing the client as a "task" to viewing the client as a person.

Maintains and updates skills checklist and provides to educator(s) as required

Knows, understands and abides by YRMC policies and procedures.

Maintains ongoing communication with unit CNE, preceptor, and Extern Coordinator for ongoing evaluation of practice.

Facilitation of Learning

Under the supervision or guidance of a registered nurse, demonstrates the ability to facilitate learning for patient and/or families. Includes both formal and informal facilitation of learning.

Participates in identifying patient/family education needs.

Collaborates in the identification of discharge planning issues based upon admission assessment, and works with their team to makes appropriate referrals and monitor patient/families progress and readiness for discharge.

Progresses from viewing patient education as a systematic task to evaluating the patients’ readiness to learn and understand the information, as evidenced by preceptor/team feedback.

Continually strives to suggest ways to improve personal, departmental and organizational performance.
