Summary:

The RN First Assist (RNFA) performs first assistant responsibilities in accordance with the State of Arizona Nurse Practice Act and AORN Standards. The RNFA functions under the direct supervision of the surgeon being assisted and assists the surgeon on a surgical procedure by positioning, prepping and draping the patient, retracting tissue, suturing and ligating tissue, suctioning and applying dressings. The RN Fist Assist is dedicated solely to assisting the primary surgeon within the scope of practice.

Responsibilities:

Provides technical assistance under the direct supervision and direction of the operating surgeon; appropriately exercises the right and responsibility to refuse to perform any act that is beyond his/her education, experience, and/or capability as defined by the State of Arizona Nurse Practice Act and AORN standards.

Assists in positioning, preparation of the surgical site, and draping of the patient.

Performs intraoperative surgical first-assisting, under the direction and direct supervision of the surgeon, including using instruments/medical devices, providing wound exposure, handling and/or cutting tissue (including dissection), providing hemostasis, suturing; retracting, and dressing application.

Consistently demonstrates knowledge of procedures, knowledge of the anatomy, the ability to follow directions, and the ability to anticipate surgeon/procedure needs.

Assists in orientation of operative staff (RN/Surgical techs) members to new equipment and procedures.

Performs, when assigned to a surgical procedure as a first assistant, functions only in that role and is not assigned additional/other duties on that surgical case until released as the first assistant by the surgeon.

When not assigned as a first assistant, performs other duties as requested including but not limited to being assigned to surgical cases in the scrub or circulating role, either in the MOR, WSS, or OSD.

Essential:
* BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS)
* REGISTERED NURSE (RN)
* REGISTERED NURSE FIRST ASSIST (RNFA)

Education:
Essential:
* ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE

Other information:
REQUIRED: 3+ years related experience
